Truths
about Euthanasia and who is really saving the pets.
The simple meaning of euthanasia is ‘mercy killing’.
O.K., maybe it’s not that simple of a meaning. Euthanasia is simply a nice way of saying the animal needed to be put to death because…(any reason). It does not make it right to do so.
Truthfully, many people take on a pet without ever considering the rights of the pet and the what-ifs involved with having one.
Many people believe that a pet is simply a dumb animal and they treat it as such. But, are these animals better off when taken away by authorities and put to death rather than having a chance at life? Most organizations that are in place to prevent cruelty to animals do exactly that.
P.E.T.A.: The people for the ethical treatment of animals is an organization that believes all animals should be treated ethically, yet they kill more animals than most organizations that prevent cruelty. Since 1998, PETA has killed over 17,000 animals, nearly 85 percent of all animals they have so-call rescued.
Newsweek magazine elaborates more on this subject.
The BIG problem is, in a nutshell, FOUR MILLION pets are put to death each year. Thirty years ago, this number was fifteen million. Progress has been made, so it appears.
Too many landlords do not allow pets, spay and neuter programs are not being utilized effectively enough, not enough resources are there to accomplish a ‘no-kill’ environment for shelters, and the public is not informed enough on the issues.
The math is not very difficult. Thirty years ago there were about 67 million pets in homes. Today, there are about 165 million pets in homes. When you consider the previous numbers of 15 million put to death with respect to 4 million today, you can easily see that instead of 1 out of 4.5 pets euthanized, today we have 1 out of every 41 pets killed.
So, mankind is improving, but is this enough for the public to settle for?
For me, FOUR MILLION is completely unacceptable. We are still referring to 4 million pets that could have been saved. Even if you consider that only about 80 percent of them were healthy, you are still talking about over 3 million pets killed each year. We can do better.
What do you do now that you know this?
- Each year millions of unwanted pets are born and most are treated like disposable commodities. One female dog and her offspring can produce 67 thousand dogs in just six years. Please spay or neuter your pets to stop this vicious cycle of death.
- Simply inform everyone you know.
- Distribute this as an eBook for free to all your pet friends.
- Spay or neuter your pets, especially, if you have no intention of properly placing the siblings into a loving home in need of a happy pet.
- Push legislators to not allow landlords to discriminate against pet owners.
- Assist your local shelter(s) in placing pets into loving homes.
- Promote ‘no-kill’ ideas to everyone.
Bringing these ideas and facts to the forefront will help stop the ignorance in America.
A Pet As A Gift
Can your friend or love one really afford to take care of a new pet? Is the recipient of this living, breathing animal willing to have him spayed/neutered and will they keep the pet up to date with the required immunizations? Are they willing to pay for medical bills when their pet gets sick or injured or do they feel that pets are easily replaceable? Are they going to mind having animal fur all over their clothes, furniture, and house? What about dogs chewing on the furniture, will they understand? Pets do all of these things and more. It’s unrealistic to think that others will feel the same way you do about a pet or that they will find these little chores and antics as simple, cute, amusing, or endearing as you do.
Ultimately, I do believe that PETA, and most animal cruelty organizations have good intentions, but these organizations need to know what we consider as acceptable behavior. You do not have to believe in everything that these organizations do.
They do need many volunteers, foster homes, contributions, and public awareness campaigns.
At Happy Cockers, we promote ‘No-Kill’ shelters/rescues and any organization that is utilizing this concept as part of their organizational plan.
If you would like to help, utilized the donate button provided or contact your local shelters/rescues and see if they are in need. I am sure they will graciously accept any help they can get.
Treat your pet as a child…
